WEG produced only one Sandperson pose, so this squad looks like a chorus line ('Everybody oughtta have a mace'). This figure, like many of WEG's designs, seems to be based on the original action figure. The sandpeople seen in the movie actually had a variety of different looking head wraps and gaffe sticks.
I used quite a few colors on the robes trying to get the look I wanted. The robes in the movie look like a dirty white to me instead of brown or tan. The deep shadows and stains are Citadel Brown ink; the final highlights include Americana Sand and Ceramcoat Trail Tan. The high contrast between large areas of dark brown shadows and off-white highlights would be inappropriate on most other figures, but it helps to make these desert scavengers look ragged and dirty.
I converted one figure to carry a hunting rifle -- my first serious conversion. Sandpeople carry simple long rifles without the heat dissipators or other details seen on military issue blaster rifles. This rifle was made from a piece of paperclip wire that included a tiny bit of curve at the butt end. I filed the muzzle flat, then made a little rectangular box-shaped stock out of Das Pronto modeling clay. I added a scope made of wire and a muzzle sight made from a chip of plastic.
To convert the figure I sawed off his arms and saved the gaffe stick for a later project. I drilled completely through the body at the shoulders and threaded a length of stiff wire through the hole. I cut and bent the wire to the right pose then built up the new arms and hands from Das on the wire armature. I tried to make the sleeves look full which then made the rest of the body look skinny, so I also added some volume to the skirt on his right side and broadened the belt sash to balance the figure's overall shape. Now his head looks slightly too small for his buffed up body but he still looks believable.
